World Trade Organisation rules will limit the extent to which UK farm subsidies can be linked to environmental measures post-Brexit, say farm leaders.
“This severely limits the degree to which agri-environment payments can deliver the broad economic benefits currently delivered through direct payments.”
FUW president Glyn Roberts
The Farmers Union of Wales issued the warning in a Brexit briefing at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in Builth Wells on Tuesday (29 November).
WTO rules meant agri-environment payments should only reflect the income foregone or extra costs to farmers undertaking environmental measures, it said.
An inappropriate balance between direct support and agri-environment payments could have “far-reaching adverse consequences”, the FUW warned.
