Brexit is a great opportunity to increase UK self-sufficiency in food – but only if the policy framework is right, says the NFU.
NFU vice-president Guy Smith described the government’s timetable for negotiating Brexit as “extremely ambitious”.
There was a worry the whole thing would be rushed through and existing EU regulation would be simply “copied and pasted” into UK law.
“Farmers are very worried that they will get all of the regulation and all the restraints, but none of the benefits” of EU farm support, Mr Smith told the House of Lords EU Energy and Environment sub-committee.
