MPs quiz ministers on Brexit and migrant farm workers

Defra minister George Eustice and immigration minister Robert Goodwill will be quizzed by MPs investigating the labour requirements of the food supply chain.

The horticulture sector says it faces a labour crisis if Brexit spells an end to the free movement of workers from the European Union.

Some 80,000 horticultural workers come from outside the UK.

The two ministers will give evidence to the House of Commons environment, food and rural affairs committee on Wednesday (15 March).

The committee is conducting an inquiry into the impact of labour constraints on feeding the nation.

Figures from Defra’s agricultural accounts put the value of paid labour at £2.5bn in 2015, equating to around 14% of total financial inputs.
